Winter grooming tips!
Pads and Feet...Keeping the hair on your dogs pads trimmed helps keep ice and snow from building up between the pads. Ice, snow and salt especially, can lead to cracked pads. Wash your pets feet after walks to remove any salt. Protective creams can be applied. Keep an eye on the nails! Nails usually grow faster over the winter since your dog probably isnt spending as much time outside and naturally wearing them down.
Skin and Coat...Keeping your dogs coat clean and combed out is extremely important over the winter! A clean, matt-free coat provides better insulation than a dirty, matted one. The last thing I want to do is shave down a dog in the winter, but if the coat is too matted, the humane thing to do for the dog is shave him/her down and start over. Sweaters and coats can be used until the coat starts to grow back in. Keeping your dog on a regular 4-6 week grooming schedule, as well as regular combing at home, will help keep the matting under control. Winter air means dry skin and coat, which can lead to itching, chewing, hot spots and raw skin. Moisturizing shampoo and conditioners help with the dryness. Brushing will also help since it stimulates and releases the natural oils in your dogs skin.
